WORKING GROUP

LHA has selected 25 members of the Lee Highway community to serve on the "Working Group on Renaming Lee Highway." The members (see below) are comprised of representatives from LHA's Community Advisory Committee (CAC) and Lee Highway Civic Associations, local business/property owners, members of the LHA Steering Committee, Lee Highway residents, and local activists.

The Group's work will be completed based on a charge that defines preferred outcomes, criteria and rules for new words, an outline of the process, and describes LHA's Guiding Principles. They will meet at least four times via zoom and all meetings will be open to the public.

Meetings dates are:
  • Wednesday, September 16th, 6:30-7:45pm
  • Wednesday, September 30th, 6:30-8:30pm
  • Wednesday, October 21st, 6:30-8:30pm
  • Wednesday, December 2nd, 6:30-8:30pm
  • If needed, early January, 6:30-8:30pm

The Lee Highway community can view these meetings live and submit their questions to be answered. A recording of each meeting will also be available to those unable to watch live. Meeting links, documents, and recorded videos can be found on the Links & Documents page.

In addition to the Working Group, LHA has appointed members to five Advisory Groups: the Branding Advisory Group, the Business & Property Owners Advisory Group, the Institutional Advisory Group, the Transportation Advisory Group, and the Neighborhood Advisory Group. These groups will provide additional support to the renaming process and help to include the greater Arlington community.

How Will the Process Work?

During their meetings, the Working Group On Renaming Lee Highway will:
  • Agree upon Evaluation Criteria and Rules.
  • Evaluate names submitted by the public based on the Criteria and Rules.
  • Reduce the long list to a shortlist of 20 names.
  • Send the shortlist to be evaluated by Special Advisory Groups on Branding, Transportation, Business, Institutions, and Neighborhoods and be publicly polled by the community.
  • Based on Advisory Group and community input and dialogue during meetings, select one preferred name and 2-4 alternatives.
  • Send the results to the LHA Board for review.
The LHA Board will submit the names chosen by the Working Group to the Arlington County Board who will subsequently submit the recommendation to the Commonwealth Transportation Board or the Virginia General Assembly for approval and implementation.
